Becoming a U.S. Naval Sea Cadet

For those who want to learn the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment, and about Navy or Coast Guard life, and want some discipline in their life, this is an excellent program. Cadets are expected to care for themselves during the program, establishing goals and benchmarks to help them succeed in future endeavors, employment, and opportunities. 

Before prospective cadets can be admitted to the Corps, the following admission criteria must be considered:

Step 1: Verify qualifications

• Must be a US citizen

• Age: To become a Sea Cadet, you must be age 13, but not yet 18 years old.

• To join as a League Cadet, you must be at least 10, but not yet 13 years old.

• Complete a physical examination: A medical examination similar to a high school sports physical is required for all cadet applicants to the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) or Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC).  While essential membership requirements cannot be waived, other non-essential procedures or unit/training-specific policies, may be modified or waived as necessary to accommodate disabilities.  In other words, even an applicant who has a disability must be able to do everything that is essential to USNSCC membership, as defined in our regulations.  

• Immunization record:  All applicants must submit a current record of all immunizations, on any form provided by the family physician or state department of public health.  All applicants must demonstrate compliance with the current recommended immunization schedule (including, if applicable, a catch-up schedule) issued by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC).

• Must be satisfactorily enrolled in a public or private school or a certified home school program with a GPA of at least 2.0.

• Be of good moral character and free of any felony convictions.

• Refrain from drugs, alcohol and tobacco use.

• Be unmarried and remain single while in the program.

 

Step 2:

Contact us to attend an orientation meeting and shadow weekend

Prospective candidates and parents will be invited to an orientation meeting to share information about the unit’s activities and requirements.  The CO and staff will ensure that the family understands both the opportunities and commitments of being involved in the US Naval Sea Cadet program.  Please contact LMMD34info@gmail.com or fill out the contact form below at the bottom of this page to join the list for our next orientation meeting. Please state in the message tab if you and you child would like to be added to our orientation list. After this meeting, the prospective cadet will be invited to shadow a drill weekend where they will be interviewed by our staff. The prospective cadet will also be required to pass the Physical Readiness Test for their respective age range in order to be accepted in LT Michael Murphy Division. Please refer to the resources tab and click PRT for all physical training requirements. 

 

Step 3: Complete the application

Once a family has decided to make the commitment to join the program, you will be invited to enroll where you will have to submit the completed application packet and submit the enrollment fees.  You can download the forms linked below. ALL FORMS ARE REQUIRED!

• Cadet Application (NSCADM001 Page 1-2) - signed in two spots by parent

• Report of Medical History (NSCADM001 Page 3-4) - signed by parent and physician

• Report of Medical Examination (NSCADM001 Page 5-6) – completed, signed, and stamped by physician 

• Medical History Supplemental (NSCADM Page 7-8) – required if child takes any OTC and/or prescription medications, mark n/a if not applicable

• Request for Accommodation (NSCADM001 Page 9-10) – required if an accommodation is necessary where a medical condition precludes full, unlimited participation in the program, signed by parent, mark n/a if not applicable

• Parental Support Agreement (NSCADM001 Page 11)– The leadership of the NSCC is comprised of adult volunteers. This form provides the list of volunteer opportunities available within this program.

• An essay written by the potential cadet explaining "Why do I want to become a Sea Cadet"

• Uniform and Equipment Responsibility Agreement – All uniform items issued to cadets are the property of the LT Michael Murphy Division and are only on loan to the cadet. By signing this form, the parent agrees to take responsibility for returning all items when the cadet resigns or graduates from the program.

• Immunization record - copy signed and stamped by your physician

• Health insurance card - copy of both sides needed

• Copy of most recent report card

• Enrollment fee - The cost to join is $440 ($200 annual membership fee, $40 Physical Training gear, $200 refundable deposit for the Sea Bag and it's contents). Any uniform items that are damaged due to neglect need to be replaced at an additional cost, however normal wear and tear is expected and we will issue a new item once the old item is turned in to supply.  Fees may be paid by check (made out to USNSCC LT Michael Murphy Division), money order, or cash.

 

Step 4: Wait for approval from Headquarters

After your application has been submitted to headquarters, you will need to wait until you receive your ID card until you are considered a new recruit of the division. Once you have your ID card, you will need to have it with you at all Sea Cadet functions.  Please take very special care of your ID card because there is a $10 replacement fee for lost ID cards.

Additional Fees:

• Advanced training (AT) and Recruit training (RT) - these costs vary depending on location but range from $150 – $300 per training.  Cadets are required to attend at least one AT per year after RT as a requirement in the Sea Cadets.

• Uniforms are the property of the U.S. Navy and must be returned to the unit within 30 days once a cadet graduates or resigns. If the uniforms aren’t returned, a missing uniform fee will be issued. Please respect the integrity of the United States service uniforms and help ensure uniforms are available to incoming cadets by returning yours promptly.

• Cadets are responsible for providing their own regulation footwear and training seabag items.

You will be notified if your child is accepted into the program. Emails will be sent will instructions to follow in your application packet to complete and submit your application and enrollment fee.
